Matt 1:21-23 - “You Shall Call His Name Jesus”
Introduction
Names today… (some questions)
What do you think of when you hear the name “Jesus?”
Now, what do you think of when you hear the name Jesus?
When we hear the name Jesus the first thought should be “Salvation”
The name Jesus means “Saviour.” It is the same name as Joshua in the Old Testament. It is given to our Lord because “He saves His people from their sins.” This is His special office. He saves them from the guilt of sin, by washing them in His own atoning blood. He saves them from the dominion of sin, by putting in their hearts the sanctifying Spirit. He saves them from the presence of sin, when He takes them out of this world to rest with Him. He will save them from all the consequences of sin, when He shall give them a glorious body at the last day. Blessed and holy are Christ’s people! From sorrow, cross, and conflict they are not saved. But they are saved from sin for evermore. They are cleansed from guilt by Christ’s blood. They are made meet for heaven by Christ’s Spirit. This is salvation. He who cleaves to sin is not yet saved.

Passive Obedience
The only one that Save us from our sins: Jesus
We must repent and believe
Sin is still present today but we look forward to a day where sin’s presence will be completely gone and we will be with Christ.
Who He was - Immanuel - God with us - Authority
“Spoken by the prophet”
God literally with us
God is still “with us” - the Holy Spirit
Christ for us
Charles Spurgeon said about this Scripture:
The sense is the same as that of Immanuel, or “God with us,” or for us; since God for us is sure to save us. The two names are the same in essential meaning. If God has come to save, then God is with us; if God himself is our salvation, then God is on our side; and if the child born of the virgin be indeed the Lord of glory, then is God our friend. Strong Son of God! Immortal Love! We have not seen thy face; but we can trust thy power, and rest upon thy love. Thy very birth brings hope; but as for thy death, when thou didst bear our sins in thine own body on the tree, this is the fulfilment of all our desires, in the cancelling of sin, the removal of wrath, and the securing of eternal life. Yes, Jesus is God with us.
